{إِنَّ هَـٰذَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ یَهۡدِی لِلَّتِی هِیَ أَقۡوَمُ وَیُبَشِّرُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِینَ ٱلَّذِینَ یَعۡمَلُونَ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ أَنَّ لَهُمۡ أَجۡرࣰا كَبِیرࣰا} (سورة الإسراء:9)
(17:9) Surely this Quran guides to that which is most upright and gives good news to the believers who do good that they shall have a great reward.
The Holy Qur’an has code of behavior before and while reading. Before reading Qur’an, the reader has to make ablution (Wudu) before touching the Holy Book, be in a proper position, and it is preferred that they turn towards Qiblah. Moreover, while reciting Qur’an there are rules to abide with. These rules include how to read, the way to pronounce some letters and how to pronounce the combination of some letters, intonations, where you can, must and must not stop in a verse and so on. Each of these rules has a name and they are all named Tajweed. Tajweed generally means improving or betterment, and in the context of reading Qur’an, it is the rules for the correct and proper recitation. Reading the Holy Qur’an without learning Tajweed and recitation with a sheikh or teacher may lead to mistakes, but any misreading in Qur’an may change the entire meaning of the verses revealed to us from Allah. That is why learning Tajweed and recitation is essential for every Muslim.
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “The one who is proficient in the recitation of the Qur’an will be with the honorable and obedient scribes (angels) and he who recites the Qur’an and finds it difficult to recite, doing his best to recite it in the best way possible, will have two rewards.”
