05.1-Ten Qira’at

Qira’at is the plural of the Arabic word Qira’a which means reading. However, in the context of Qur’anic studies, Qira’at are different accepted and permitted forms of reciting the Holy Qur’an. Qira’at have small differences amongst that include differences in pronouns, stops, prolonging, pronunciation of some words etc. These differences are the topic of a whole branch of Qur’anic studies called Qira’at.

There are ten credible Qira’at for the holy Qur’an, each Qira’a is named after a reader (Qari’) who specialized in this form of recitation and dedicated himself to teaching it. For each reader (Qari’) there were two students who narrated the Qira’a from their teacher. The narrator is called (Rawi) and his narration is called (Rewayah) and is named after the Rawi and Qari together. For example, Hafs an Asim, the most popular Rewayah of the Qur’an is named after the Rawi Hafs who narrates from the Qari Asim.

Although each Qira’a is named after a certain reader, this never means that they created these forms of recitation. All ten Qira’at are correct ways of reciting the Qur’an, and each Qira’a was transmitted to us from the Prophet Mohamed PBUH through a continuous, unbroken chain of honest credible readers.

For every place in the Islamic world, there is one of the Qira’at that is popular and the Muslims of this place use this popular Qira’a in recitation, teaching Qur’an and prayers. Below is a table of all the Ten Qira’at, and their narrations (Rewayah).
