Arabic language is the official language of 22 Arab countries. It is the language of the government institutes, legislation, education and mass media. However, the language people use in everyday interaction, in the family, between friends and in street or market is different from the standard Arabic used in education and media. The Standard Arabic of education, legislation and media is called “Fusha” while everyday Arabic dialects is called “Ammeyiah”.
Check our article Modern Standard Arabic, Classical Arabic and Dialects if you want to know more about the difference between Classical Arabic, Modern Standard Arabic and Arabic Dialects.
Every country or region has a unique dialect of Arabic language, and although they all come from the same origin, they have many big differences. Arabic dialects differ in tones, pronunciation of some letters, intonations and words. Due to these differences, some Arabs may not understand each other if they speak their home Arabic dialect. A Moroccan once said to their Egyptian friend that they ate “Hoot” at lunch yesterday, the Egyptian was very surprised/astonished “Do people eat “Hoot” at the first place?” the funny thing is that “Hoot” means fish in the Moroccan dialect, but for an Egyptian “Hoot” means a whale.
Some Arabic dialects are known to be harder than others, such as the dialects of the countries of Maghreb (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia..). it is hard for an Arab that does not know these dialects to understand them. On the other hand, some dialects are more popular and understood among Arabs. The Egyptian dialect, or Egyptian Colloquial is said to be the most popular Arabic dialect and is widely understood between Arabs even outside Egypt. If you speak Egyptian colloquial it is most likely that an Arab from any Arab region will understand you.
Learning Egyptian colloquial is very useful if you are interested in getting involved in an Arab community. It will make it easier and more realistic for oral communication with Arabs, it will also help you the most if you have to deal with Arabs in some business and it will make life much easier if you are planning to visit Egypt or any other Arab country or stay there for a while. Egyptian Colloquial is the exact needed language to deal with people in street, ask about directions, negotiate prices at the market or talk to a vendor or a taxi driver.
